INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine.
Eric: Giving Advice, part 2.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving advice.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "I would recommend to try the lasagna."
Yasmine: Je recommanderais de goûter les lasagnes.
Yasmine: [slow] Je recommanderais de goûter les lasagnes.
Eric: This pattern for giving advice has 3 elements. First, the expression "I would recommend."
Yasmine: Je recommanderais.
Eric: Next, "to" followed by a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to try."
Yasmine: de goûter.
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "the lasagna."
Yasmine: les lasagnes.
Eric: Altogether, we have "I would recommend to try the lasagna."
Yasmine: Je recommanderais de goûter les lasagnes. [slow] Je recommanderais de goûter les lasagnes. [normal] Je recommanderais de goûter les lasagnes.
Eric: First you have the expression "I would recommend," followed by "to" and a verb in the infinitive form. Finally a complement.
Yasmine: Je recommanderais de goûter les lasagnes.
Eric: So remember, to give advice, simply use the expression "I would recommend," then "to” and a verb in the infinitive form, and finally add what it is you would recommend.
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "I would recommend to wait a little." First, the expression "I would recommend."
Yasmine: Je recommanderais.
Eric: Second, "to" followed by a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to wait."
Yasmine: d'attendre.
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "a little."
Yasmine: un peu.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Yasmine: Je recommanderais d'attendre un peu. [slow] Je recommanderais d'attendre un peu. [normal] Je recommanderais d'attendre un peu.
Eric: "I would recommend to wait a little."
[pause]
Yasmine: Je recommanderais d'attendre un peu.
Eric: How do you say - "I would recommend to travel off-season." To give you a hint, "to travel off-season" is...
Yasmine: voyager hors saison. [slow] voyager hors saison. [normal] voyager hors saison.
Eric: "I would recommend to travel off-season."
[pause]
Yasmine: Je recommanderais de voyager hors saison. [slow] Je recommanderais de voyager hors saison. [normal] Je recommanderais de voyager hors saison.
[pause]
Yasmine: Je recommanderais de voyager hors saison.
