| First is s. This is the s sound in sur, ciel, ça, and other words. |
| z is the z sound in zéro, onze, deuxième and other words. |
| s and z are called "fricatives" because they are pronounced by forcing air through a narrow channel in the mouth, causing friction as the air passes through it. |
| Like in English, the French s is unvoiced but tends to be slightly crisper and more forward in the mouth. To make the French s sound, place the tip of your tongue close to your upper front teeth without touching them. Let the air flow smoothly over the tongue without engaging your vocal cords, to produce a crisp, unvoiced sound. |

| The French z is voiced, just like in English, but the vocal cords vibrate more consistently in French z than in the English z. To make the French z sound, place the tip of your tongue close to your upper front teeth without touching them. Let the air flow over your tongue while engaging your vocal cords to produce a voiced, buzzing sound. |
