INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine.
Eric: Using the Verb "to have."
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about belongings.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "You have very long hair."
Yasmine: Tu as les cheveux très longs.
Yasmine: [slow] Tu as les cheveux très longs.
Eric: The pattern for talking about belongings has 3 elements. First, the pronoun, in this case the informal "you."
Yasmine: Tu.
Eric: Second, the verb "to have," conjugated in the second person singular.
Yasmine: as.
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "very long hair."
Yasmine: les cheveux très longs.
Eric: Altogether, we have "You have very long hair."
Yasmine: Tu as les cheveux très longs. [slow] Tu as les cheveux très longs. [normal] Tu as les cheveux très longs.
Eric: First you have the pronoun, then the verb "to have," conjugated according to the pronoun, and lastly the complement.
Yasmine: Tu as les cheveux très longs.
Eric: So remember, to talk about belongings, start with a pronoun, then the verb "to have" conjugated according to the pronoun, and then the belongings you want to talk about.
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "You have a pretty necklace." First, the pronoun, in this case the informal "you."
Yasmine: Tu.
Eric: Second, the verb "to have," conjugated in the second person singular.
Yasmine: as.
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "a pretty necklace."
Yasmine: un joli collier.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Yasmine: Tu as un joli collier. [slow] Tu as un joli collier. [normal] Tu as un joli collier.
Eric: "You have a pretty necklace."
[pause]
Yasmine: Tu as un joli collier.
Eric: How do you say - "You have a sense of humor." To give you a hint, "sense of humor" is...
Yasmine: sens de l'humour. [slow] sens de l'humour. [normal] sens de l'humour.
Eric: "You have a sense of humor."
[pause]
Yasmine: Tu as le sens de l'humour. [slow] Tu as le sens de l'humour. [normal] Tu as le sens de l'humour.
