Becky: Here's the informal way to ask 'Who is it?' in French.
Yasmine: [Normal] C'est qui?
Becky: First is a word meaning 'it'
Yasmine: [Normal] C' [Slow] C'
Becky: Next is the word meaning 'is'
Yasmine: [Normal] est [Slow] est
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'who'
Yasmine: [Normal] qui [Slow] qui
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'Who is it?'

Becky: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask, 'Who is that?'

Yasmine: If someone that you didn't expect is knocking at your door in France, the common question you can ask is Qui est-ce? before opening the door. This literally means "Who is it?" in a really polite way.
