INTRODUCTION
Virginie: Bonjour à tous et bienvenue sur frenchpod101.com. C’est Virginie et je suis ici avec JP, hey.
JP: Salut Virginie, this is JP. Are There Haunted Forests In France? In this lesson we're going to talk about some relative pronouns in French.
Virginie: Yes such as “qui, que, dont, où” you probably heard those before.
JP: I've heard of them yes. Now the conversation takes place in a forest near the river Yonne which we talked about last week.
Virginie: Voilà, notre conversation se passe entre Pauline et Julien.
JP: The same characters from last week.
Virginie: Exactly and I will be Pauline and JP will be Julien.
JP: You always get to be Pauline, just kidding.
Virginie: You want to be the girl?
JP: No I don't. The speakers are friends and therefore they will be speaking informal.
Virginie: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Julien : Bon, on est perdu.
Pauline : Mais non ! Regarde, c’est la rivière dont je t’ai parlé hier.
Julien : Ok. Mais je ne suis pas très rassuré, moi.
Pauline : Tu regardes trop de films.
Julien : Peut-être…et ça ? C’est la forêt où tu fais du jogging ?
Pauline : Oui, et c’est la forêt où ils ont tourné le Pacte des Loups !
Julien : Qu’est-ce que c’est, le Pacte des Loups ?
Pauline : C’est un film qui parle d'une bête qui dévore les habitants d'un village de France au XVIIIe siècle.
Julien : Ah bon ?
Pauline : Oui, et beaucoup de gens meurent à la fin.
Julien : Je vais rentrer à Paris, moi.
Pauline : Je plaisantais ! Et puis, c’est une forêt que je connais bien. Pas de danger.
Virginie: Encore une fois, avec des sous-titres.
JP: Once again, with English subtitles.
Julien : Bon, on est perdu.
: Okay, we're lost.
Pauline : Mais non ! Regarde, c’est la rivière dont je t’ai parlé hier.
: No we're not! Look, this is the river I told you about yesterday.
Julien : Ok. Mais je ne suis pas très rassuré, moi.
: Okay. But I'm not reassured.
Pauline : Tu regardes trop de films.
: You watch too many movies.
Julien : Peut-être…et ça ? C’est la forêt où tu fais du jogging ?
: Maybe...what about this? Is this the forest you jog in?
Pauline : Oui, et c’est la forêt où ils ont tourné le Pacte des Loups !
: Yes, and it's the forest where they shot "The Blair Witch Project!"
Julien : Qu’est-ce que c’est, le Pacte des Loups ?
: What is "The Blair Witch Project?"
Pauline : C’est un film qui parle d'une bête qui dévore les habitants d'un village de France au XVIIIe siècle.
: It's a movie that talks about a beast devouring the inhabitants of a village in France in the 18th century.
Julien : Ah bon ?
: Really?
Pauline : Oui, et beaucoup de gens meurent à la fin.
: Yes, and they die at the end.
Julien : Je vais rentrer à Paris, moi.
: I'm going back to Paris.
Pauline : Je plaisantais ! Et puis, c’est une forêt que je connais bien. Pas de danger.
: I was kidding! Besides, it's a forest I know well. No danger.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Virginie : So they’re lost.
JP : Pas du tout.
Virginie : Nan, ils sont pas perdus.
JP : No, not at all, pas du tout.
Virginie : Pauline connaît bien la forêt.
JP: Okay, she knows this place, she knows the forest, but Julian is a Paris boy, he's a city boy.
Virginie: Un garçon de la ville.
JP: And he's getting scared.
Virginie: Voilà, et en plus elle lui parle du film “Le pacte des Loups”.
JP: “The Brotherhood of the Wolf”
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: Is that a real film?
Virginie: Oui oui, c’est un film des années 90.
JP: “From the '90s”
Virginie: Oui et comme elle dit c’est une grosse bête qui mange des gens.
JP: “It's a beast that devours the people”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: That is frightening, I'm frightened a little bit just talking about this lesson.
Virginie: Ça fait très très peur, moi je vais partir en courant.
JP: She's going back to Paris ladies and gentlemen.
Virginie: I'm back. Mais elle lui dit “Je plaisantais”, “I was joking”.
JP: Okay “I was just kidding”, “I'm just kidding” “Je plaisantais”.
Virginie: Yeah because she was telling him “That's the forest where they shot the movie “Le Pacte des Loups”.
JP: She was just trying to scare him.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: Alright so that forest wasn't particularly haunted but are there really haunted places in France?
Virginie: Well, il y a des rumeurs.
JP: Okay so there's rumors of what?
Virginie: Il y a des forêts en Bretagne qui sont supposées être hantées.
JP: Okay in Brittany.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: The extreme northwest of France.
Virginie: Ouais. C’est la tradition celtique qui dit que il y a des forêts hantées, des fantômes.
JP: “This is the Celtic tradition that there's ghosts in the haunted forests in Brittany”
Virginie: Voilà. But there are many more stories all over France, but I'm not too sure about them.
JP: Are you scared of going into haunted forests in France? You're scared now,

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Virginie: So la première expression c’est “faire du jogging”.
JP: “Faire du jogging”. That sounds like Jogging, but in English you can say “I jog”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: But in French you have to say “I do jogging”.
Virginie: Voilà, c’est comme ça, “je fais du tennis”.
JP: “I do tennis”, “I play tennis”.
Virginie: “Je fais du foot”.
JP: “I play soccer”.
Virginie: “Je fais de l’athlétisme”.
JP: “I run track”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: So I'm realizing now that we have a bunch of different verbs in English, to talk about running track, or playing football, or playing tennis but in French it's all “faire”
Virginie: Voilà, toujours le verbe “faire”, donc notre deuxième expression c’est “être perdu”.
JP: “To be lost”.
Virginie: Voilà. Julien dit, “On est perdu”.
JP: “We're lost”
Virginie: Voilà, et c’est différent du verbe “se perdre” par exemple.
JP: “Se perdre” would be “To get lost”.
Virginie: Voilà. C’est un verbe pronominal. “Je me perds”.
JP: So it's reflexive so “I'm getting myself lost” right? “I'm getting lost right now”.
Virginie: Voilà, c’est ça. JP, tu te perds !
JP: “JP you're getting lost”, “You're losing yourself”, oh no.
Virginie: Stay with me don't go there.
JP: Non non, je suis perdu.
Virginie: Ah tu es perdu, déjà tu es perdu.
JP: “I'm already lost”.
Virginie: Moi je me perds.
JP: Ah, you’re getting lost.
Virginie: Dans les méandres de la grammaire Française. Yeah this is not...
JP: The complexities of the French grammar.
Virginie: Voilà. Et la dernière expression donc c’est “Je ne suis pas très rassuré, moi”.
JP: Okay how appropriate, “I am not that reassured”.
Virginie: C’est Julien qui dit ça dans le dialogue, “je ne suis pas très rassuré” comme “j’ai un peu peur”.
JP: “I'm a little scared” is what it means right?
Virginie: Oui, voilà.
JP: “I'm not reassured” means “I'm scared”.
Virginie: Voilà. Et on l’utilise beaucoup en français, “ouh, je suis pas très rassurée moi”.
JP: “I'm not feeling good about this”.
Virginie: Oui voilà. “Pas très rassuré”. Et par contre si tu veux rassurer quelqu’un.
JP: “If you want to reassure someone”.
Virginie: Tu dis “je te rassure”.
JP: Okay it's like saying, “Don't worry”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: But it's really saying “I reassure you”.
Virginie: Oui. Je te rassure, je reste ici.
JP: It's funny whenever we say “je te rassure” we're always reaching out with our left hand.
Virginie: Voilà, c’est exactement ce qu’on est en train de faire dans le studio.
JP: We're both doing it right now, je te rassure.
Virginie: “Je te rassure”, and you will hear it a lot in France, “je te rassure, je te rassure, c’est pas grave, c’est pas grave”. Voilà. Shall we talk about grammar?
JP: Okay let's do that.

Lesson focus
Virginie: Donc aujourd’hui nous allons voir les pronoms relatifs.
JP: “The relative pronouns”.
Virginie: Le premier de notre liste c’est “dont”.
JP: “Dont” that's the hardest one Virginie, we're starting with the hardest one.
Virginie: Is that bad?
JP: No, no, no.
Virginie: Okay, dans le dialogue nous avons “la forêt dont je t’ai parlé”.
JP: “The forest of which I spoke to you”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: We would say in English-
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: -“The forest I talked to you about”.
Virginie: Ok, je vais essayer d’expliquer, c’est pas très difficile.
JP: Not at all.
Virginie: Par exemple JP, si je te dis “je t’ai parlé de la forêt”.
JP: “I talked to you about the forest”.
Virginie: Voilà. Tu vois il y a le petit “de”.
JP: “De la forêt”. You heard that “de”.
Virginie: Si tu veux commencer ta phrase avec “la forêt”, then you're going to use “dont” because it's a little “de” in the sentence.
JP: So if you're going to make a relative clause out of a phrase with “de” in it you're probably going to have “dont”
Virginie: Voilà, c’est ça. Donc again “je t’ai parlé de la forêt”.
JP: “I talked to you about the forest”.
Virginie: Voilà, et donc “c’est la forêt dont je t’ai parlé”.
JP: That's “The forest about which I talked to you”.
Virginie: Voilà, exactement. Donc un autre exemple, JP j’ai besoin de la voiture.
JP: “JP I need the car”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: “Which car?”, “What car Virginie?” “I don't have a car for you”.
Virginie: La voiture dont j’ai besoin.
JP: Okay “The one that I need”.
Virginie: Voilà, c’est ça, donc j’ai besoin de la voiture. You're going to use “dont” if you want to reverse your sentence, “la voiture dont j’ai besoin”.
JP: “The car that I need”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: If you know how to use “besoin” you know that “de” always goes with “besoin”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: So if somehow you got “besoin” in a relative clause you're going to use “dont”.
Virginie: Voilà, exactement. Et ça marche pour à peu près tous les verbes suivis par “de”.
JP: “All of the verbs that are followed by “de” like “parler de”
Virginie: “Avoir envie de”, “Se moquer de”, ah oui, “se moquer de”. “To mock someone”, “To make fun of someone”.
JP: Exactly, yeah, I know that verb very well.
Virginie: Why do you say that?
JP: Parce-que je suis l’homme dont tu te moques beaucoup. “I'm the guy that you always make fun of”.
Virginie: It's true.
JP: So that's “dont” that was the hardest one of these relative pronouns, now the rest of them are easy, what's next?
Virginie: “Où”.
JP: “Où” means “where”.
Virginie: Voilà. Et c’est très facile, dans le dialogue c’est “la forêt où tu fais ton jogging”.
JP: “The forest where you do jogging”, “Where you jog”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: So all the relative clauses where you need a location, so “where”.
Virginie: Par exemple “je travaille dans cet immeuble”.
JP: “I work in this building”.
Virginie: “C’est l’immeuble où je travaille”.
JP: “It's the building where I work”. “Où je travaille”.
Virginie: Voilà. So whenever you're talking about a place, a location.
JP: And it works just the same as “Where” in English.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: The same relative pronoun that talks about location.
Virginie: Voilà, très facile. Ensuite nous avons “qui”.
JP: “Qui” means “Who”.
Virginie: Voilà. C’est un peu comme en anglais aussi.
JP: A little bit, yeah.
Virginie: Dans le dialogue elle dit “c’est un film qui parle d’une bête”.
JP: “A film that talks about beasts” now we just said this was “Who” right? But in English you only use “Who” with animate things like people.
Virginie: Oui.
JP: Or maybe an animal that you really like.
Virginie: Oui, et en français-
JP: In French it's not the case, in French what's going on is that this “qui” is replacing the subject of the verb.
Virginie: Oui, dans le dialogue elle dit : “C’est un film qui parle d’une bête” donc “le film parle d’une bête”.
JP: Okay so “It's the film”.
Virginie: Voilà, “le film” c’est le sujet. “Le film parle d’une bête”.
JP: The word “le film” is the subject and the film talks about a beast, now since it's the film that's talking we're going to need a relative pronoun that stands for the subject which is “qui”.
Virginie: Exactly. C’est un film QUI parle de.
JP: Okay, “qui”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: Now the relative pronoun “qui” takes the place of a subject, so now we're also going to need a relative pronoun that takes the place of an object.
Virginie: Oui et ça va être le pronom “que”. Dans le dialogue elle dit : “c’est une forêt que je connais bien”. Elle connait bien quoi ? Elle connait bien la forêt.
JP: So since it's “je connais quoi” so that “quoi” is going to be a direct object, complément d’objet direct.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: So we're going to use “que”.
Virginie: Voilà, “l’homme que je connais bien”.
JP: “The man who I know well” or “The man that I know well”.
Virginie: “Le film que je regarde”.
JP: “The movie that I'm watching”.
Virginie: Yeah exactly, “I'm watching what?”, “I'm watching a movie”, it's an object then you're going to use “que”. I think we're done with our relative pronouns.
JP: That's right we've got “que” that replaces objects, “qui” that replaces subjects, “où” that replaces places and “dont” that replaces phrases that start with “de”.
Virginie: Voilà, exactement. Merci JP.
