INTRODUCTION
Virginie: Bonjour à tous et bienvenue sur frenchpod101.com, this is Virginie and I'm here with JP. Hello, JP.
JP: Salut Virginie, The Things You'll Do For French Love. In this lesson we're going to learn different ways to explain the cause of your actions.
Virginie: Voilà. Little words like “because of” “since” etcetera.
JP: Okay so our conversation takes place in the street, the man from the previous dialog has actually been following the lady he met on the bus.
Virginie: Le vilain monsieur !
JP: So they're still speaking formal French because they don't know each other, even though he tried last week to get her to say “tu”.
Virginie: C’est vrai.
JP: Okay, let's listen to this conversation.
DIALOGUE
Elle: Vous me suivez ?
Lui: Je vous suis parce que je suis perdu.
Elle: Pourquoi vous n’achetez pas un plan ?
Lui: Mais je suis perdu à cause de vous !
Elle: C’est étrange, puisque vous ne me connaissez pas.
Lui: Non, ce n’est pas étrange, puisque vous êtes si belle !!!
Elle: Bon. Comme vous êtes désespéré, je veux bien vous parler.
Lui: Oh merci ! Grâce à vous, je connais le bonheur.
Elle: Eh bien, vous n’êtes pas exigeant, vous !
Virginie: Encore une fois, avec des sous-titres.
JP: Once again, with English subtitles.
Elle: Vous me suivez ?
JP: Are you following me?
Lui: Je vous suis parce que je suis perdu.
JP: I'm following because I'm lost.
Elle: Pourquoi vous n’achetez pas un plan ?
JP: Why don't you buy a map?
Lui: Mais je suis perdu à cause de vous !
JP: But I'm lost because of you!
Elle: C’est étrange, puisque vous ne me connaissez pas.
JP: That's strange, since you don't know me.
Lui: Non, ce n’est pas étrange, puisque vous êtes si belle !!!
JP: No, it's not strange, because you look so beautiful!!!
Elle: Bon. Comme vous êtes désespéré, je veux bien vous parler.
JP: Well. As you are desperate, I agree to speak to you.
Lui: Oh merci ! Grâce à vous, je connais le bonheur.
JP: Oh thank you! Because of you, I can feel happiness.
Elle: Eh bien, vous n’êtes pas exigeant, vous !
JP: Well, you're not demanding, you!

Virginie: Well I think he's totally in love.
JP: He is hooked. Hook, line and sinker, he is in trouble and good thing he knows how to talk to a lady.
Virginie : Je crois pas hein.
JP : Yeah. So what happened here? she asked him why he's following her and-
Virginie : Voilà oui, ça devient un peu… Un peu bizarre cette histoire. Oui il lui dit qu’il la trouve belle et il la suit.
JP : Yeah he thinks she's pretty so he's following her, it's a little creepy.
Virginie: Oui c’est vrai. Mais tu sais en français on dit “le ridicule ne tue pas”.
JP: So ridiculousness doesn't kill?
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: So absurdity is not going to hurt anybody, okay.
Virginie: So you can be ridiculous on the street and fall over stairs in front of everybody and whatever.
JP: So Virginie have you ever been followed by a guy?
Virginie: No, no, c’est moi qui les suis !
JP: Okay so it was you who followed the guys?
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: Why am I not surprised? Anyway that guy as she says, seems a little désespéré, right “a little bit desperate”

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Virginie: D’accord, alors notre premier mot pour aujourd’hui c’est “suivre”.
JP: “Suivre”. “To follow” right?
Virginie: Voilà. Dans le dialogue nous avons : “Vous me suivez ?”.
JP: “Are you following me?”
Virginie: Voilà. Donc c’est comme en anglais, on peut suivre quelqu’un.
JP: You can follow somebody so it doesn't take any prepositions in between.
Virginie: Non. On peut suivre une émission de télévision.
JP: Okay so this is “to follow a TV program” this is “watch it regularly”
Virginie: Et on peut suivre une conversation aussi.
JP: So you can take part in conversations “suivre” is “to follow”.
Virginie: Mais alors attention.
JP: What happened, why?
Virginie: Parce-que “je suis” “I'm following” or “I follow”, c’est exactement la même chose que “I am”.
JP: Oh they have the same form, same spelling too?
Virginie: Oui.
JP: Okay so you're going to have to figure it out from the context whether “je suis” means “I'm following” or it means “I am”.
Virginie: Voilà. Comme dans la phrase “je vous suis parce-que je suis perdu”.
JP: Okay so that's definitely “I'm following you”.
Virginie: “parce-que je SUIS perdu”, “because I am lost”.
JP: Right, you can't say “because I'm following lost” right?
Virginie: I'm following Lost, I love Lost.
JP: Oh the show.
Virginie: The show.
JP: Oh okay.
Virginie: Okay.
JP: But not the past participle “lost”?
Virginie: Non c’est vrai.
JP: Let's talk about “perdu” a little bit.
Virginie: Oui. “Perdu”, he says “je suis perdu à cause de vous”.
JP: “I'm lost because of you”.
Virginie: Dans cette phrase, il y a deux significations de “perdu”. Il y a “je suis perdu physiquement” I'm-
JP: “I'm physically lost”, “I'm lost in the city, I don't know where I'm going”, “I don't know where I am” right?
Virginie: Voilà. Et après “je suis perdu dans ma vie à cause de vous”.
JP: Okay “I'm lost in my life” like more of a spiritual, mental thing.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: That happens in English too.
Virginie: Yeah it's exactly the same.
JP: So Virginie when I was in high school I was kind of a loser so French people would say?
Virginie: Oh, c’est vrai ?
JP: Il est un peu perdu.
Virginie: Il est perdu JP, regardez JP comme il est perdu.
JP: Oh no.
Virginie: Yeah.
JP: That sparks memories.
Virginie: Oh poor JP, yeah it's the way we say “he's such a loser” especially when you're kids.
JP: I heard that a lot, I also heard “étrange”.
Virginie: C’est vrai que t’es un peu étrange.
JP: Yeah.
Virginie: Un peu, hein.
JP: Étrange means “Strange” right?
Virginie: Voilà. JP est étrange. J’ai un peu peur dans ce studio toute seule avec lui.
JP: Okay, étrange.
Virginie: Donc pour dire “étrange” on peut aussi dire “bizarre”.
JP: Okay, “bizarre”, “étrange”.
Virginie: Voilà, bizarre. Tu connais la phrase : “Bizarre, bizarre, moi j’ai dit bizarre ? Comme c’est bizarre”.
JP: No I don't know that, what is that from?
Virginie: It's from a movie, ça vient d’un film qui s’appelle “Drôle de Drame”, c’est un film de Marcel Carné de 1937, c’est vieux.
JP: Okay 1937.
Virginie: Voilà. Cette phrase est très très très connue en France, si tu dis à quelqu’un en France : “Bizarre, bizarre, moi j’ai dit bizarre ? Comme c’est bizarre”, people will right away identify the movie.
JP: Right I'll do a quick translation it's like “Bizarre? I said bizarre, bizarre, me? I said bizarre?, how bizarre”
Virginie: Voilà. C’est ça.
JP: It's pretty bizarre.
Virginie: C’est très bizarre.
JP: It's a bizarre quote.
Virginie: Bon.
JP: And the dude in our dialog is pretty bizarre isn't it?
Virginie: Mais oui c’est vrai !
JP: It's kind of a bizarre situation.
Virginie: Lesson.
JP: Okay let's do some grammar.
Virginie: Donc aujourd’hui nous allons voir la cause et la conséquence.
JP: Okay “The causes and the consequences”.
Virginie: Voilà et on va surtout regarder les petits mots qui expriment la cause et la conséquence.
JP: Okay so the words that link cause and consequence together so what do we call these?
Virginie: Les conjonctions.
JP: Les conjonctions, okay, we say conjunctions in English.
Virginie: Voilà. Alors on va commencer avec le premier c’est très facile, très vite “Je vous suis parce-que je suis perdu”.
JP: “I'm following you because I'm lost”.
Virginie: Voilà, vous connaissez tous le mot “parce-que”
JP: “Parce-que” means “because”.
Virginie: Voilà, et ça marche de la même manière en anglais.
JP: It has the same function in English. we see that it's connecting the consequence “je vous suis” with the cause “parce-que je suis perdu”, “because I'm lost”.
Virginie: Voilà. Donc “parce-que” introduit la cause.
JP: It introduces the cause “parce-que” “because”. Everybody knows that one Virginie what's another one?
Virginie: Oui, c’est vrai, something more tricky, “à cause de”.
JP: “À cause de”, okay this is “because of”.
Virginie: Voilà. “Je suis perdu à cause de vous”.
JP: Okay, “I'm lost because of you”.
Virginie: Voilà. Un autre exemple, “je suis en colère à cause de toi”.
JP: “I'm angry because of you” now what's the difference Virginie between “parce-que” and “à cause de” ?
Virginie: “À cause de” introduces a negative cause.
JP: A negative cause, okay. So when I say “Je suis en colère à cause de toi”, “I'm angry because of you, it's kind of your fault”
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: “It's all your fault”, “I'm angry because of you, It's your fault”.
Virginie: C’est ça. Dans le dialogue aussi, “Je suis perdu à cause de vous”, “It's because of you, it's your fault if I'm lost”.
JP: “it's your fault” okay, so when you use “à cause de” there's a negative aspect to it whereas “parce-que” just means “because”.
Virginie: Mais en anglais “because of” ça peut aussi être positif ?
JP: That's right “because of” in English is neutral it doesn't necessarily have that negative connotation. It doesn't have a positive connotation either, you can use it either way.
Virginie: Right for example in the sentence, “My success is all because of you”.
JP: Yes, “My success is all because of you, it's not your fault” you know “it's thanks to you”
Virginie: Voilà, mais en français par contre ce sera : “It's all your fault, I'm successful and it's all your fault”, “J’ai du succès à cause de toi” doesn't really make sense because it would mean “I'm successful and it's your fault”.
JP: Okay now how would we say that? “I'm successful thanks to you”.
Virginie: “Grâce à toi”.
JP: “Grâce à toi”, okay so this is another conjunction.
Virginie: Oui, et c’est dans le dialogue, il dit : “Grâce à vous je connais le bonheur”.
JP: Okay “Thanks to you, I know happiness”.
Virginie: Voilà. Yeah he's a little over the top.
JP: So this is the conjunction “because of” but with the connotation “thanks to”.
Virginie: Voilà, exactement. Un autre exemple. JP ?
JP: Yes?
Virginie: Grâce à toi, je suis un peu plus intelligente tous les jours.
JP: Oh “thanks to you I'm a little bit smarter every day”.
Virginie: C’est vrai.
JP: Oh Virginie.
Virginie: Je m’améliore, je m’améliore.
JP: Yes I think she's exaggerating ladies and gentlemen, there is a lot of flattery here in the studio today.
Virginie: Oui, c’est vrai. On s’aime beaucoup c’est pour ça.
JP: Oui, c’est ça.
Virginie: On se flatte.
JP: And I can say Virginie that grâce à toi, ma français a amélioré.
Virginie: Ah, merci.
JP: Thanks to you my French has gotten better.
Virginie: D’accord, je suis contente. Let's move on to the next one.
JP: Okay what's the next one?
Virginie: “Puisque”.
JP: “Puisque” is like “since” ?
Virginie: Voilà, c’est la même chose.
JP: Okay.
Virginie: “C’est étrange puisque vous ne me connaissez pas”.
JP: “It's strange since you don't know me” so “puisque” just means “since”, piece of cake.
Virginie: Ouais, et un autre exemple avec “puisque”. JP puisque tu es là, allons-y !
JP: “Well JP since you're here let's go”
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: Alright I guess I'm not moving fast enough.
Virginie: You're a little slow, smart but slow, okay.

JP: Now, what's our last grammar point today?
Virginie: Alors la dernière c’est “comme”.
JP: Okay this means “like” or “as” in the context of our dialog today it's just going to mean “as”.
Virginie: Voilà.
JP: So how did we say it?
Virginie: “Comme vous êtes désespéré, je veux bien vous parler”.
JP: “As you're desperate” or “since you're desperate, I will talk to you”.
Virginie: She's so condescending.
JP: She is, she is “since you're so desperate”.
Virginie: Pauvre garçon. Donc “comme” is “as” and that's used pretty much the same way as in English.
