Let's look at how the future tense works in French. |
This is called the futur simple, or simple future. It's used to talk about something that will happen. |
To form it, we use a special set of future tense endings: |
-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont |
For regular -er and -ir verbs, we add these endings directly to the infinitive—the full form of the verb. |
For example: |
visiter becomes je visiterai |
That means, "I will visit." |
For -re verbs, we drop the final -e before adding the ending. |
For example: |
prendre becomes je prendrai, |
meaning "I will take." |
Some verbs are irregular and don't use the whole infinitive. |
They start with a special stem and then add the same endings. |
For example: |
être becomes je serai – "I will be" |
avoir becomes j'aurai – "I will have" |
Let's practice using the future tense in some simple sentences. |
