INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know French Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 8. Asking About Ownership. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about ownership. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "Whose umbrella is this?" |
Yasmine: À qui appartient ce parapluie? |
Yasmine: [slow] À qui appartient ce parapluie? |
Eric: The pattern for asking about ownership has 3 elements. First, the pronoun "whose." |
Yasmine: À qui. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to belong to," conjugated in the third person singular. |
Yasmine: appartient. |
Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "this umbrella." |
Yasmine: ce parapluie. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "Whose umbrella is this?" |
Yasmine: À qui appartient ce parapluie? [slow] À qui appartient ce parapluie? [normal] À qui appartient ce parapluie? |
Eric: First you have the pronoun "whose," followed by a verb conjugated in the third person, most often "to belong to" or "to be," then a word meaning "this" or "these," and then a noun. |
Yasmine: À qui appartient ce parapluie? |
Eric: So remember, to ask about ownership, start with the pronoun "whose," followed by the verb "to belong to" or "to be," and the belonging you want to know about. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "Whose jacket is this?" First, pronoun "whose." |
Yasmine: À qui. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be," conjugated in the third person singular. |
Yasmine: est. |
Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "this jacket." |
Yasmine: cette veste. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: À qui est cette veste? [slow] À qui est cette veste? [normal] À qui est cette veste? |
Eric: "Whose jacket is this?" |
[pause] |
Yasmine: À qui est cette veste? |
Eric: How do you say - "Whose eraser is this?" To give you a hint, "eraser" is... |
Yasmine: gomme. [slow] gomme. [normal] gomme. |
Eric: "Whose eraser is this?" |
[pause] |
Yasmine: À qui appartient cette gomme? [slow] À qui appartient cette gomme? [normal] À qui appartient cette gomme? |
[pause] |
Yasmine: À qui appartient cette gomme? |
