| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about time. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, "When does the train arrive?" |
| Yasmine: Quand est-ce que le train arrive? |
| Yasmine: [slow] Quand est-ce que le train arrive? |
| Eric: The pattern for asking about time has 4 elements. First, the adverb "when." |
| Yasmine: Quand. |
| Eric: Second, the polite form to ask something meaning, "is it that...?" |
| Yasmine: est-ce que. |
| Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "the train." |
| Yasmine: le train. |
| Eric: And last, the verb "to arrive," conjugated in the third person singular. |
| Yasmine: arrive. |
| Eric: Altogether, we have "When does the train arrive?" |
| Yasmine: Quand est-ce que le train arrive? [slow] Quand est-ce que le train arrive? [normal] Quand est-ce que le train arrive? |
| Eric: First you have the adverb meaning "when." This is followed by the polite form of asking a question, literally meaning "is it that." It’s used quite similar to the English auxiliaries "do" or "does." Finally, we have a complement, which is most often a subject (an article and a noun) followed by a verb, and sometimes an extra complement. |
| Yasmine: Quand est-ce que le train arrive? |
| Eric: So remember, to ask when something is going to happen, start with the adverb "when," followed by the polite form of asking a question, and what you want to know. |
| Eric: Here's another example meaning, "When do we eat?" First, the adverb "when." |
| Yasmine: Quand. |
| Eric: Second, the polite form to ask something meaning, "is it that...?" |
| Yasmine: est-ce qu'. |
| Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "we" or "one." |
| Yasmine: on. |
| Eric: And last, the verb "to eat," conjugated in the third person singular, which is usually used to mean "we." |
| Yasmine: mange. |
| Eric: Altogether we have... |
| Yasmine: Quand est-ce qu'on mange? [slow] Quand est-ce qu'on mange? [normal] Quand est-ce qu'on mange? |
