INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know French Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 4. Asking About Location or Position. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about location or position. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "Where are my keys?" |
Yasmine: Où sont mes clés? |
Yasmine: [slow] Où sont mes clés? |
Eric: The pattern for asking about location or position has 3 elements. First, the adverb "where." |
Yasmine: Où. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be," conjugated in the third person plural. |
Yasmine: sont. |
Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "my keys." |
Yasmine: mes clés. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "Where are my keys?" |
Yasmine: Où sont mes clés? [slow] Où sont mes clés? [normal] Où sont mes clés? |
Eric: First you have the adverb meaning "where," then the conjugated verb according to the pronoun, and then the subject. |
Yasmine: Où sont mes clés? |
Eric: So remember, to ask where something is, start with the adverb "where," followed by a conjugated verb, and the thing(s) you’re looking for. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "Where is the bathroom?" First, adverb "where." |
Yasmine: Où. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be," conjugated in the third person singular. |

Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "the bathroom." |
Yasmine: la salle de bains. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Où est la salle de bains? [slow] Où est la salle de bains? [normal] Où est la salle de bains? |
Eric: "Where is the bathroom?" |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Où est la salle de bains? |
Eric: How do you say - "Where is the cat?" To give you a hint, "the cat" is... |
Yasmine: le chat. [slow] le chat. [normal] le chat. |
