INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine.
Eric: Asking for Information About Something.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about manner.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "How are you going to the party?"
Yasmine: Comment vas-tu à la fête?
Yasmine: [slow] Comment vas-tu à la fête?
Eric: The pattern for asking about manner has 4 elements. First, the adverb "how."
Yasmine: Comment.
Eric: Second, the verb "to go," conjugated in the second person singular.
Yasmine: vas.
Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "you" in the informal.
Yasmine: tu.
Eric: And last, a complement, in this case "to the party."
Yasmine: à la fête.
Eric: Altogether, we have "How are you going to the party?"
Yasmine: Comment vas-tu à la fête? [slow] Comment vas-tu à la fête? [normal] Comment vas-tu à la fête?
Eric: First you have the adverb meaning "how," then the conjugated verb according to the pronoun, followed by the subject, and then the complement.
Yasmine: Comment vas-tu à la fête?
Eric: So remember, to make inquiries, start with the adverb "how," followed by a conjugated verb, a pronoun, and a complement about the thing you want to know.
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "How will you celebrate New Year's?" First, the adverb "how."
Yasmine: Comment.
Eric: Second, the verb "to celebrate," conjugated in the second person singular.
Yasmine: fêtes.
Eric: Third, the subject, in this case "you" (informal).
Yasmine: tu.
Eric: And last, the complement, in this case "the New Year."
Yasmine: le Nouvel An.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Yasmine: Comment fêtes-tu le Nouvel An? [slow] Comment fêtes-tu le Nouvel An? [normal] Comment fêtes-tu le Nouvel An?
Eric: "How will you celebrate New Year's?"
[pause]
Yasmine: Comment fêtes-tu le Nouvel An?
Eric: How do you say - "How do you play this game?" To give you a hint, "this game" is...
Yasmine: ce jeu. [slow] ce jeu. [normal] ce jeu.
Eric: "How do you play this game?"
[pause]
Yasmine: Comment joue-t-on à ce jeu? [slow] Comment joue-t-on à ce jeu? [normal] Comment joue-t-on à ce jeu?
[pause]
Yasmine: Comment joue-t-on à ce jeu?
