INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know French Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 18. Expressing Uncertainty. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing possibility. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "I might go grocery shopping later." |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je fasse les courses plus tard. |
Yasmine: [slow] Il se peut que je fasse les courses plus tard. |
Eric: The pattern for expressing possibility has 3 elements. First, the expression literally meaning "It may be that I," equivalent of "I might." |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to do" in the subjunctive form. |
Yasmine: fasse. |
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "grocery shopping later." |
Yasmine: les courses plus tard. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "I might go grocery shopping later." |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je fasse les courses plus tard. [slow] Il se peut que je fasse les courses plus tard. [normal] Il se peut que je fasse les courses plus tard. |
Eric: First you have the expression "it may be that I." This is followed by a verb in the subjunctive form modified in gender and number according to the subject, and lastly the complement. |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je fasse les courses plus tard. |
Eric: So remember, to express possibility, first start with the expression "it may be that I." Next is a verb in the subjunctive form modified in gender and number according to the subject, and last what you might do. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "I might work this summer." First, the expression literally meaning "It may be that I," equivalent of "I might." |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to work" in the subjunctive form. |
Yasmine: travaille. |
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "this summer." |
Yasmine: cet été. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je travaille cet été. [slow] Il se peut que je travaille cet été. [normal] Il se peut que je travaille cet été. |
Eric: "I might work this summer." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Il se peut que je travaille cet été. |
Eric: How do you say - "I might be late." To give you a hint, "to arrive late" is... |
Yasmine: arriver en retard. [slow] arriver en retard. [normal] arriver en retard. |
Eric: "I might be late." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Il se peut que j'arrive en retard. [slow] Il se peut que j'arrive en retard. [normal] Il se peut que j'arrive en retard. |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Il se peut que j'arrive en retard. |
