INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know French Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 13. Expressing Certainty. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing certainty. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "I’m sure it's the right answer." |
Yasmine: Je suis sûre que c'est la bonne réponse. |
Yasmine: [slow] Je suis sûre que c'est la bonne réponse. |
Eric: The pattern for expressing certainty has 4 elements. First, the expression "I am sure that" for a female speaker. |
Yasmine: Je suis sûre que. |
Eric: Second, the subject, in this case the pronoun "it." |
Yasmine: c'. |
Eric: Third, the verb "to be," conjugated in the third person singular and present tense. |
Yasmine: est. |
Eric: And last, the complement, in this case "the right answer." |
Yasmine: la bonne réponse. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "I’m sure it's the right answer." |
Yasmine: Je suis sûre que c'est la bonne réponse. [slow] Je suis sûre que c'est la bonne réponse. [normal] Je suis sûre que c'est la bonne réponse. |
Eric: First you have the expression "I am sure that." The writing of the word "sure" varies depending on if the speaker is a man or a woman. Then comes the subject, followed by a verb conjugated in gender and number according to the subject, and lastly the complement. |
Yasmine: Je suis sûre que c'est la bonne réponse. |
Eric: So remember, to express certainty, start with the expression "I'm sure that," followed by a subject and a verb conjugated according to that subject, and then the thing you’re positive about. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "I'm sure he'll be happy about his present." First, the expression "I am sure that" for a male speaker. |
Yasmine: Je suis sûr qu'. |
Eric: Second, the subject, in this case the pronoun "he." |
Yasmine: il. |
Eric: Third, the verb "to be," conjugated in the third person singular and future tense. |
Yasmine: sera. |
Eric: And last, the complement, in this case "happy about his present." |
Yasmine: content de son cadeau. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Je suis sûr qu'il sera content de son cadeau. [slow] Je suis sûr qu'il sera content de son cadeau. [normal] Je suis sûr qu'il sera content de son cadeau. |
Eric: "I'm sure he'll be happy about his present." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je suis sûr qu'il sera content de son cadeau. |
Eric: How do you say - "I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose." To give you a hint, "to not do it on purpose" is... |
Yasmine: ne pas faire exprès. [slow] ne pas faire exprès. [normal] ne pas faire exprès. |
Eric: "I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je suis sûr qu'il ne l'a pas fait exprès. [slow] Je suis sûr qu'il ne l'a pas fait exprès. [normal] Je suis sûr qu'il ne l'a pas fait exprès. |
