INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know French Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 12. Requesting Permission. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting permission. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "Can I go to the bathroom?" |
Yasmine: Je peux aller aux toilettes? |
Yasmine: [slow] Je peux aller aux toilettes? |
Eric: The pattern for requesting permission has 4 elements. First, the pronoun, in this case "I." |
Yasmine: Je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be able to," conjugated in the first person singular. |
Yasmine: peux. |
Eric: Third, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case “to go.” |
Yasmine: aller. |
Eric: And last, the complement, in this case "to the toilet." |
Yasmine: aux toilettes. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "Can I go to the bathroom?" |
Yasmine: Je peux aller aux toilettes? [slow] Je peux aller aux toilettes? [normal] Je peux aller aux toilettes? |
Eric: First you have the pronoun, then the verb "to be able to" conjugated according to the pronoun, then a verb in the infinitive form, and lastly the complement. |
Yasmine: Je peux aller aux toilettes? |
Eric: So remember, to request permission, start with a pronoun, then the verb "to be able to" conjugated according to the pronoun, a verb in the infinitive form, and then the thing you want to ask permission for. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "Can I borrow a pen?" First, the pronoun, in this case "I." |
Yasmine: Je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be able to," conjugated in the first person singular. |
Yasmine: peux. |
Eric: Third, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case “to borrow.” |
Yasmine: emprunter. |
Eric: And last, the complement, in this case "a pen." |
Yasmine: un stylo. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Je peux emprunter un stylo? [slow] Je peux emprunter un stylo? [normal] Je peux emprunter un stylo? |
Eric: "Can I borrow a pen?" |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je peux emprunter un stylo? |
Eric: How do you say - "Can I sit here?" To give you a hint, "to sit here" is... |
Yasmine: s'asseoir ici. [slow] s'asseoir ici. [normal] s'asseoir ici. |
Eric: "Can I sit here?" |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je peux m'asseoir ici? [slow] Je peux m'asseoir ici? [normal] Je peux m'asseoir ici? |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je peux m'asseoir ici? |
