Do you know how to talk about your weekend in French? |
Welcome to Three Step French Practice by FrenchPod101.com. |
In this lesson, you will practice talking about your weekend using le passé composé with both être and avoir. |
Let's look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
Tu as fait quoi ce week‑end, Corentin ? |
"What did you do this weekend, Corentin?" |
Samedi, je suis allé pêcher avec mon père à l'aube. |
"Saturday I went fishing with my dad at dawn." |
je suis allé |
This sentence uses le passé composé, a tense for completed actions in the past. |
Here, the verb aller uses être as the helping verb, not avoir, because it's a movement verb. |
In French, most verbs use avoir to form le passé composé: |
Subject + avoir + past participle |
But some verbs — especially those showing movement or change of state — use être instead: |
Subject + être + past participle (+ agreement) |
So in our dialogue, je suis allé means "I went." |
It follows the être pattern. |
We'll keep practicing how to talk about what you did and where you went using both structures. |
Let's get started. |
