Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody! This is Yafa from FrenchPod101.com.
Do you know how to say “thank you” in French? In this lesson, you'll learn three different ways to say "thank you" and how to respond.
Let’s start with the easiest one.
Merci.
[slowly] Merci.
It means “thank you.”
If you want to show you really appreciate something, you should use the following phrase.
Merci beaucoup.
[slowly] Merci beaucoup.
You just need to add beaucoup at the end. It means “thank you so much.”
The word beaucoup means "a lot." When you want to express gratitude more politely, make sure to use beaucoup.
To sound like a pro, you can also add why you're thankful. For example, Merci beaucoup de votre aide.
“Thank you very much for your help.”
What if you want to show appreciation for something in a more formal way? Here's how you can say it.
Je vous remercie.
[slowly] Je vous remercie.
Je is "I," and vous is the formal word for "you." Remercie means “give thanks.” So it literally means "I give thanks to you." Je vous remercie.
Now you know 3 different ways to say "thank you" in French! But how do you respond if someone thanks you?
If someone says "thank you" in French, simply say De rien. It means "it's nothing." If it's in a formal situation, say Je vous en prie.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the expressions and repeat after me.
“Thank you."
