I'm confused about the expression '...a l'air..." Someone once told me that "รงa a l''air" meant "that looks like...".

In the example given in this lesson the sentence is as folllow: Le garรงon a l'air triste. According to the translation given by the lesson (The boy feels sad) would have made more sense to use the verb "se sentir" in this case? or does this expression can also be use to describe how someone feels?

"Se sentir" is "to feel (one self)".

Je me sens bien : I'm feeling good.

Je me sens mal : I'm feeling bad/down.
