Stay tuned to find out!
Salut, je suis Lya.
Hi everyone! I’m Lya.
In this lesson, you’ll learn about French numbers, and how to count.
In every language, learning the names of numbers and how to use them in different situations is very important.
Numbers and their functionality are an integral part of every society to make things run smoothly.
We use it, for instance, to indicate quantities, time, dates - the list goes on!
In this video you'll learn how to count up to 1000 and beyond also how to operate with phone numbers, and prices.
First is counting up to 1000 and beyond.
Once you know how to count up to 100, you know how to count up to 999. Here’s how:
Deux-cent
“Two-hundred”
[SLOW] Deux-cent
Deux-cent
Trois-cent
“Three-hundred”
[SLOW] Trois-cent
Trois-cent
And it follows this scheme up until
Neuf-cent
“Nine-hundred”
[SLOW] Neuf-cent
Neuf-cent
Then, you can easily assemble big numbers by just combining what you already know:
Deux-cent-sept
"Two-hundred-seven"
[SLOW] Deux-cent-sept
Deux-cent-sept
Cinq-cent-cinquante-six
"Five-hundred-fifty-six"
[SLOW] Cinq-cent-cinquante-six
Cinq-cent-cinquante-six
Neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-trois
"Nine-hundred-eighty-three"
[SLOW] Neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-trois
Neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-trois
Now, I promised you “infinity and beyond,” so let’s reach the stars with some enormous numbers!
In French, One thousand is “Mille”
Thousand
"Mille"
[SLOW] Thousand
Thousand
For ten and one hundred thousand, we add “ten” or one hundred” respectively:
Ten Thousand
"Dix-mille"
[SLOW] Ten Thousand
Ten Thousand
Hundred Thousand
"Cent-mille"
[SLOW] Hundred Thousand
Hundred Thousand
After this, we have the word for million, which is “million”
million
"million"
[SLOW] million
million
However the English “billion” in French is “milliard”
milliard
"billion"
[SLOW] milliard
milliard
And “trillion” in french is “billion,” which can be a bit confusing.
billion
"trillion"
[SLOW] billion
billion
And finally the very large number “gogol” [10100], which is ten to the power of 100, is simply
“Un gogol”
How do they combine? Just like every other number!
Deux-mille-dix-neuf
"Two thousand-nineteen"
[SLOW] Deux-mille-dix-neuf
Deux-mille-dix-neuf
[1,286,347]
Un million
deux-cent-quatre-vingt-six-mille
trois-cent-quarante-sept
"One-million
Two-hundred-eighty-six-thousand
three-hundred-forty-seven"
[SLOW]
Un million
deux-cent-quatre-vingt-six-mille
trois-cent-quarante-sept
Un million
deux-cent-quatre-vingt-six-mille
trois-cent-quarante-sept
Next, let’s talk about ages.
Here’s how to ask someone their age:
Casually you can ask:
Tu as quel âge ?
"How old are you?"
[SLOW] Tu as quel âge ?
Tu as quel âge ?
A more formal way to ask this would be:
Quel âge avez-vous ?
"How old are you?"
[SLOW] Quel âge avez-vous ?
Quel âge avez-vous ?
There’s nothing tricky about how to answer:
J’ai 20 ans.
"I’m 20 years old."
[SLOW] J’ai 20 ans.
J’ai 20 ans.
This literally means: “I have 20 years.”
Just be careful. The French are a bit demanding about politeness, and it’s generally considered rude to ask a woman her age!
Next, let’s take a look at how the French use phone numbers.
10-digit French phone numbers are usually given in five groups.
For instance: 03 27 42 24 06.
In any group starting with zéro (0), the zéro is pronounced.
For example, the number above would be:
Zéro-trois, vingt-sept, quarante-deux, vingt-quatre, zéro-six.
A: Peux-tu me donner ton numéro de téléphone s’il-te-plaît ? Je t’appellerais.
B: Bien sûr ! C’est le 06 81 15 67 03
A: Please, could you give me your phone number ? I’ll call you.
B: Sure! It’s 06 81 15 67 03
With all these big numbers, you’re ready for any kind of shopping in France, even if you want to buy a brand new Airbus. So, let’s see how to deal with prices with some examples.
Let’s say you’re in a shop, wondering about the price of a Playstation:
Combien ça coûte ?
"How much is it?"
[SLOW] Combien ça coûte ?
Combien ça coûte ?
Combien coûte cette Playstation ?
"How much is this Playstation?"
[SLOW] Combien coûte cette Playstation ?
Combien coûte cette Playstation ?
Quel est le prix de cette Playstation ?
"What’s the price of this Playstation?"
[SLOW] Quel est le prix de cette Playstation ?
Quel est le prix de cette Playstation ?
The most common answers would be:
La Playstation est à 300€. (“The Playstation is 300€.”)
Elle coûte 300€ (“It costs 300€.”)
In this last example, the sentence starts with Elle because Playstation is feminine in French, but you can also use the neutral form and say:
Ça coûte 300€.
In this lesson you learned how to count up to 1000 and beyond and how to operate with phone numbers, and prices.
