Culture File - France, Lesson 18 - Party the Parisian Way!
Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: France series at FrenchPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential cultural information about France, French culture, and French people. In this lesson, we’re going to learn about birthday parties in France. I’m Becky, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 18 - Party the Parisian Way!
In France, just like in most other countries, during one’s birthday, in French anniversaire, one typically receives a slew of text messages from friends and family, which makes people feel happy to know others are thinking about them on their special day.
When they’re celebrating their birthday in France, some people enjoy simply having a nice lunch or dinner with their family, and of course, the traditional birthday cake with candles or bougies. Before blowing them out, you must always make a silent wish, in French voeu. Then come the presents, in French cadeaux!
However, in general most people like to have a big birthday celebration, or fête, usually planned for the weekend, so they can sleep all morning after a long night of partying! For such occasions, people typically invite all of their friends, and either have a house party, or go out to dinner somewhere fancy.
At children’s birthdays, people mostly invite friends over for the afternoon snack, or goûter time for a couple of hours. If the weather is nice, the kids play games like sack race, in French course en sac, and musical chairs, or chaise musicale.
