Intro

Hi, everyone. I’m Lindsay from FrenchPod101.com. In this video, we’ll be talking about 10 Words You Need to Know at the Airport. Let’s go!
WORD 1
The first word is...
[Normal] terminal [Slow] terminal
"terminal"
For example, you can say L'avion va aller au terminal afin que nous puissions sortir.
This means "The plane is going to pull into the terminal so we can exit."
Afin que means "in order to"or "so that." It indicates a goal or a finality and it requires the subjunctive tense.
WORD 2
[Normal] Sortie des bagages [Slow] Sortie des bagages
This means "luggage pickup."
As you can see, in French we don't have an equivalent for "luggage pick-up." You can use similar expressions, such as sortie des bagages or point de récupération pour bagages.
For example, you can say Je vais à la sortie des bagages pour récuperer ma valise, which means "I'm going to the luggage pick up to get my suitcase back."
WORD 3
[Normal] billet d'avion [Slow] billet d'avion
This means "plane ticket."
Acheté comes from the verb acheter, "to buy," and it is conjugated with passé composé. Passé composé can be translated with the present perfect or the simple past tense in English. We use it to indicate that an action in the past has been completed.
For example, you can say J'ai acheté mon billet d'avion en ligne,
which means "I purchased my plane ticket online."
WORD 4
[Normal] vol [Slow] vol
This means "flight."
Vol is a word that can mean "theft" and "flight." Of course, you will understand the meaning depending on the situation.
For example, you can say Il a raté son vol car il est parti trop tard, which means "He missed his flight because he left too late."
WORD 5
The next word is...
[Normal] embarquer [Slow] embarquer
This means "to board."
In French, when you get on a plane or a boat, you use the word embarquer, but don't use it when talking about a car or a train.
For example, you can say J'embarque dans l'avion,
which means "I get on the plane."
WORD 6
The next word is...
[Normal] porte d'embarquement [Slow] porte d'embarquement
This means "boarding gate."
For example, La porte d'embarquement, c'est où tu embarques dans l'avion
means "The boarding gate is where you board the plane."
In this sentence, we have two words which seem similar -- embarquement and embarquer. Embarquement is a noun that means "boarding" and embarquer is a verb that means "to board." Their meaning is pretty similar, too.
WORD 7
[Normal] retardé [Slow] retardé
This means "delayed."
For example, you can say Le vol est retardé à cause de la tempête de neige, which means "The flight is delayed because of the snow storm."
À cause de is a French prepositional phrase that means "because of" or "due to." It has a negative meaning, something like "it is because of you" or "it is your fault."
WORD 8
[Normal] décoller [Slow] décoller
This means "to take off."
You can say L'avion décollera dans vingt minutes,
which means "The plane will take off in twenty minutes."
This sentence uses the future tense with the verb décoller ("to take off"). As in English, the future tense implies that something has not yet happened but will happen.
WORD 9
[Normal] atterrir [Slow] atterrir
This means "to land."
For example, you can say L'avion a atteri à l'aéroport à dix heures,
which means "The plane landed at the airport at ten o'clock."
It is very important to see the difference between a and à in French. A is a verb and it’s the 3rd form of the French verb avoir ("to have"), while à isn’t a verb; it's a preposition and you'll find it after a conjugated verb.
WORD 10
[Normal] réservation [Slow] réservation
This means "reservation."
Here is an example using this word, Avez-vous une réservation?
This means, "Do you have a reservation?"
Avez-vous is a basic and convenient way to start a question. Avez is a present tense conjugation of the verb avoir, which means "to have."
WORD 11
[Normal] échange de devise [Slow] échange de devise
This means "currency exchange."
For example, Il préfère échanger ses devises à l'aéroport, bien que cela soit plus cher means, "He prefers to exchange his currencies at the airport, although this is more expensive."
In French, bien que is a conjunction that means "though" or "although." Bien que requires the French subjunctive tense.
WORD 12
[Normal] détaxé [Slow] détaxé
This means "duty-free."
For example, Les aéroports sont un endroit idéal pour faire des achats détaxés means, "Airports are a great place to do some duty-free shopping."
In French, we can also use the English word "duty-free."
