Lesson Transcript

Salut, je m'appelle Ingrid. Hi everybody! I’m Ingrid.
Welcome to FrenchPod101.com’s “Le français en 3 minutes”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn French.
In the last lesson, we learned the numbers from one to ten. Have you forgotten? Here I'll tell you again:
Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix!!
And now let’s continue from eleven.
Onze.
[slowly] onze.
Douze.
[slowly] douze.
Treize.
[slowly] treize.
Quatorze.
[slowly] quatorze.
Quinze.
[slowly] quinze.
Seize.
[slowly] seize.
Dix-sept.
[slowly] dix-sept.
Dix-huit.
[slowly] dix-huit.
Dix-neuf.
[slowly] dix-neuf.
And finally we have:
Vingt
[slowly] vingt.
Okay, now repeat after me. I'll say the numbers and give you time to repeat each one.
11. onze
12. douze
13. treize
14. quatorze
15. quinze
16. seize
17. dix-sept
18. dix-huit
19. dix-neuf
20. vingt
These numbers may seem harder to remember, but you really just have to memorize Onze, douze, treize, quatorze, quinze, seize and vingt. But for dix-sept, dix-huit, dix-neuf, the numbers always start with dix, or "ten."
Let’s not stop at 20! Counting from ten to one hundred is super easy! Now I'll give you the tens:
Trente
Quarante
Cinquante
Soixante
Soixante-dix
Quatre-vingt
Quatre-vingt-dix
Cent
[H screen]
While you have to memorize a few of these numbers, there are a couple of tricks that will make memorizing them incredibly easy! Notice that "sixty" is Soixante, and "seventy" is Soixante-dix. Do you remember what dix means? Of course, it is the number for 10! So "seventy" is simply "sixty-ten" - Soixante-dix
[slowly] Soixante-dix
"Eighty" is Quatre-vingt. Can you break this down? The first part, which you learned in the last lesson, is quatre, "four". The second part we learned earlier in this lesson. What does it mean? That's right, 20. So all together, saying eighty is like saying "four twenties"! Quatre-vingt
[slowly] Quatre-vingt
And "ninety" - Quatre-vingt-dix is just like seventy. Add ten to the number before! Eighty plus ten is ninety. Quatre-vingt-dix.
[slowly] Quatre-vingt-dix.
The last thing to learn today is how to form compound numbers above twenty. This is also super easy!
Take the tens and simply add the numbers you learned in the previous lesson.
Let’s try it out.
How would you say “fifty-six” in French? Let’s take it step-by-step. "Fifty" is cinquante, and then add "six", six.
Cinquante-six! It’s done! Isn’t that easy?
Let’s make another number, for instance, "ninety-eight."
Take "ninety", quatre-vingt-dix, and add "eight", huit:
Quatre vingt dix huit!
One last tricky part. If you are trying to add the number “un” in a compound number, for example, 21 or 31, you need to add an “et” before “un.”
Twenty one is not vingt un, it’s vingt et un.
Thirty one is trente et un.
After only two lessons, you are now able to count to one hundred in French!
In the next lesson we are going to put your number knowledge to use! Do you have all the skills you need to go shopping in France? If not, I'll be waiting for you in our next Le français en 3 minutes lesson.
À bientôt!
