Marie: Oh, please don't mention him! He is fat, small, and unemployed...but what can you do? She is so in love with him!

National Day

July fourteenth is a French national holiday; it is the National Day. This date leads to a parade of French troops on the Champs-Elysées in Paris as well as military parades or ceremonies and fireworks in most cities. The fireworks are organized on the nights of the thirteenth to the fourteenth or the fourteenth to the fifteenth, depending on the cities.

It was in 1880 that the Third Republic adopted July fourteenth as the date for National Day. This date corresponds to two important days of the French Revolution, the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 and Federation Day on July 14, 1790. If July 14, 1789 was judged as an overly bloody day by some parliament members, Federation Day helped reached a consensus. The law adopting this date was therefore promulgated on July 6, 1880 and simply stipulated that "the Republic adopted July fourteenth as its annual National Day" without indicating any year of reference.

Since 1880, a parade of the French military troops on the Champs-Elysées takes place on July fourteenth. The parade is the oldest in the world, after the one of the Russian Army on the Red Square. Traditionally, a military cortege, on foot, on horses, motorized, and aerial, goes down the Champs-Elysées Avenue from the Etoile Place to the Concorde Place where soldiers salute the president, his government, and sometimes foreign political figures.

Although there has never been any talk about suppressing it, the parade has been the subject of controversy over the past few years. The Green political party, notably in the person of Sylvain Garel, President of the Green group at the council [...]</itunes:summary>

Musee D'Orsay

The Musee D'Orsay is on the Seine River in Paris, France. It is housed in the former Gare D'Orsay railway station that was originally built to for the 1889 World's Fair, then later used as a hotel.

This museum holds creative works by mostly French artists that date between the years of 1848 and 1915, and it is known for their collections of impressionist and post-impressionist artwork from artists, such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, and Vincent Van Gogh. The museum's operation hours are from eight-thirty A.M. to six P.M. daily except Mondays, and they're open late on Thursday nights until nine forty-five P.M. You can also buy tickets online at www.fnac.com or at www.ticketnet.fr.

A few of the major works you'll find in the Musee D'Orsay include "The Birth of Venus" by Alexandre Cabanel, "The Luncheon on the Grass" by Edouard Manet, "L'Absinthe" and "At The Stock Exchange" by Edgar Degas, "Montmartre" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and "Starry Night Over The Rhone" by Vincent Van Gogh. There are also some new exhibits that may interest visitors.

One in particular is "Beauty, Morals and Voluptuousness in the England of Oscar Wilde." It explores the British "aesthetic movement" which developed a new idealization of art and beauty that was unlike the Victorian ideal of sexuality and art between the 1860s and early 1900s. Another one, "Degas and the Nude," features artwork from Degas that examines the way he approached nudity as an artist.

In addition to works of art, you also have the opportunity to hear concerts, especially during the lunch hour between October and May.

Mais me voilà enfin à l'intérieur.

Today is hell. I had to go to the supermarket. Why is everybody going to do the shopping on the same day? After fighting to find a parking space, I then had to go to the reception desk to get some change because, as always, I forgot to have a one-euro coin ready for the cart. But here I am at last.

I go past the domestic electrical appliances and school stationery departments. Same for the clothing…I don't need any. I finally arrive in the food department, the aim of this weekend outing. Refrigerated shelves. I pass the "charcuterie" ("cooked pork meats"), weaving between the carts left behind by their owners. I look at my shopping list. I find butter and cheese. Meat is always well sorted by animal, so there's no problem finding what I want.

Back to dairy…I forgot the yogurt. Why are there some many? Two shelves full of cups; the choice is hard among yogurt, flavored, with fruit bits, fat free… Okay, the pack joined my other foodstuffs.

I get to the den of the vegetables and fruit. I take my plastic bags; I fill them in with tomatoes, carrots, apples, and oranges. I go to get my vegetables weighed. The scale man sticks the labels with bar codes on for the cash desk. There's only tins, pastas, and rice to go.

I am at the checkout now. I pay by card. I didn't go to the automatic cashier; I prefer seeing somebody. I go out. It's okay; it just took me thirty minutes. I drive back home, and I put away the shopping. I can finally get my breath back. Next week, maybe I'll try the market. It's open air, people are quieter, and sellers always have a word to please you.

For you, is it a chore to go and do the shopping?

----Formal English----

Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris's Most Fascinating Home of the Dead

Pere Lachaise Cemetery is the one cemetery in the world that is visited the most often, and it is also Paris's largest cemetery. Additionally, there are three World War I memorials located there. It's located on Boulevard de Menilmointant, and it takes its name from the confessor to Louis XIV, Pere Francois de la Chaise de Aix, who was Louis XIV's confessor.

In earlier centuries, the neighborhood surrounding the cemetery was poor and filled with outlaws. The hill on which the cemetery would later be located, Champ Eveque, was where a wealthy merchant first built his home in 1430.

In the seventeenth century, the Jesuits acquired the home and converted it into a hospice for members of their order. Father Francois de la Chaise also lived near the area and owned property there until his death in 1709. In 1763, the Jesuits were expelled from this property, and in 1804 the city of Paris purchased this property so that they could build new cemeteries. This was because in the early 1800s, new cemeteries were needed on the outskirts of Paris as an alternative to the horrible burial conditions in the city.

The fear of diseases from rotting corpses led the government to build the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Today, the number of bodies that have been interred there number more than 300,000, and the cemetery is surrounded by five thousand trees and numerous benches followed by a cobblestone pavement. Another fascinating sight for tourists at the cemetery is the tomb of Hippolyte Leon Denizard Rivail, who was a well-known spiritist. Visitors touch his tomb so they can contact their departed loved ones.
