They ask in French, “We have some tickets and thought you might want to go to the car races with us.” You look at them confused, it seems they found one you don’t know. Learn French with FrenchPod101.com! Now you have friends in France…so what are you going to do with them? You are anxious to see some of the city before you have to start school at the French university, and definitely before you have to start working! So you call them up on the phone and ask if they want to spend the day showing you around town. They are excited to do something fun and you all decide to meet at the park around the corner. When you arrive, your friends ask in French, “Do you like to play any sports? We could play around at the park for a while…or maybe head to the gym.” You played a lot of sports back home, but as much as you have studied French, you didn’t learn how to talk about sports. You attempt to imitate a soccer player kicking a ball, but it takes several minutes before your friends catch on and teach you the French word for soccer. But now they know the game you are playing – charades! The next one you try to act out is a tennis player hitting a ball. And you thought soccer took a long time to guess?! By the time you get through acting out soccer, tennis, golf, and basketball – and they teach you the French words for these sports, you are so worked out you just want a nap. You had no idea learning French could be so exhausting!!

The can-can! You hear the fast-paced French music, so you decide this might be a way for you to have some fun. You get into the class, and with the way the French teacher is barking commands left and right, you imagine you must look like you have two left feet. But you laugh and enjoy yourself anyway, in part at your expense, and in part at your French instructor’s sternness. Who can be stern when doing the French can-can? When you get back to the hotel, you call your French friend and invite your friend to dance with you tomorrow. Much to your surprise, your friend responds in French, “Heck no. I don’t dance. Let’s do something else-anything else-athletic instead. Okay?”
