An American tourist is lost in Paris, during a thunderstorm. Making her way across the deserted Pont Neuf she meets a man coming the other way. “Excusez-moi monsieur,” she says, “Parlez vous anglais? You see, I’m lost, and…” The man looks back, surprised. “Me too, dear. Been walking ’round for hours and hours.” He takes a quick look at the little map that the concierge gave her at the hotel, but shrugs. His knowledge of Paris’ geography is as sketchy as hers. Over the next hour and a half, she meets another Englishman, a couple from Morocco on their honeymoon, and a tour group from Seoul, Korea. All are hopelessly lost, and not a single person has been able to find a Parisian person who can help them out. “Where are all the French people?” wonders the tourist as she continues searching. “Aren’t there any people besides tourists in Paris in August??”
In today’s Advanced Audio Blog, Christophe reflects on Paris in August. August is the busiest time for tourism in France, and today’s lesson is written from the viewpoint of a Paris native.
