You have been waiting for a chance to prove yourself and it’s finally here! The French office in the global company you work for is looking for fresh ideas for their fall lineup. They have asked you—and your arch nemesis—to fly to France and pitch your ideas personally to the head of the French office. Whoever’s presentation is chosen will be the next Head of Marketing in France! Excitedly, you take a crash-course in French, prepare a presentation that is sure to knock your French boss off his feet, and board a plane to France! Upon arriving at the French office, your future French coworkers prepare you for your presentation. They show you around the French office and explain that the large, Frenchman is a stickler for details. You aren’t worried though because you believe you have thought of everything…including learning a little French! You are sure you will outdo your rival this time! You walk proudly into your French boss’s office and begin the presentation by greeting him in your newly learned French. Everyone looks shocked after your greeting and you are not sure why…have you mispronounced something??? After the presentation the people in the office that might have been your future employees, inform you that you have just insulted your boss. What? You think to yourself how did this happen? Just then, your rival finishes his presentation and bursts through the office doors with his boss’s arm around his shoulder! Guess who you will be calling vous now?

While William Shakespeare may still make many a heart swoon, and while his famous quote may indeed be correct, we all still have to call each other something, don’t we. My grandmother’s name was Rose, and there were times when she was NOT sweet. I knew a man named Harry that had no hair at all! I know many girls named Candy…well, anyway. One of the most basic truths we have in our lives whether you speak French or any other language—something no one can take from us—is our name. Now…shouldn’t that be the very first thing you learn to communicate in French? Learn how to introduce yourself in French so all those wonderful French people you meet will know who you are! I still think You by any other name would smell as sweet in French too!
