Learn French with FrenchPod101.com! You’ve followed your family friends’ directions, and you’ve made it out to their French farmhouse outside Paris. Or what you think is their French home, at least. You can’t see a house number or any other identifying characteristic and wonder how people find each other in France. You sheepishly walk up to the door and hope you aren’t knocking on some French stranger’s door. Haven’t they made some horror movies about what happens when you knock on strangers’ doors? That kind of thing must happen in France too. Taking a deep breath, you pull the large knocker and hear a voice call, “Just a moment,” in French. The French voice sounds normal, but you never know… You pace a bit outside the door, wondering what might be taking so long, hoping to put a face with the French names you’ve been hearing from your parents since you were a child. Finally, the door opens, and it’s not a scary French monster. In fact, this French couple is exceedingly polite and so happy to see you! What a relief! You’ll live another day to see the rest of France.

She instructs you in French, “Walk a block and look to your left.” She pauses while you get there. She asks in French, “Do you see the big iron lady?” You look, but all you see is the Eiffel Tower, “Um, are you feeling okay? All I see is the Eiffel Tower, and I don’t see a lady anywhere.” She laughs and says in French, “Silly, that’s what we French have nicknamed the Eiffel Tower. I see you across the street. I’ll meet you there in two seconds!”

Learn French with FrenchPod101.com! “Where is it?” you hiss to yourself in French. You’ve been wandering around this hotel for almost half an hour, looking for the reception. The clerk said in French that the room was on the twenty-third floor, so you followed his directions and took the elevator straight to the twenty-third floor. But no room called in French “The DuPont Room” is in sight. You thought maybe you misunderstood the clerk, since you are still learning how to speak French, so you go to the thirty-second floor just to check things out. “No DuPont Room here either,” you mutter to yourself in French, getting looks from the other French passers-by. After wandering around for an hour, you go back to the lobby and sheepishly ask the concierge in French, “Is there a DuPont Room in this hotel?” The concierge explains in French, “The ground floor doesn’t count as a floor. So you really need to go to the twenty-fourth floor to find the DuPont Room.” Aha! You think to yourself, not only do I need to learn the French language, but I also have to learn how the French count too!
