I am so exhausted I don’t think I will ever catch up on my sleep! Last night was my friend’s twenty-fourth birthday celebration in Paris! We had so much fun. We threw her the biggest birthday bash-French style-in my parent’s Paris home. My parents wanted her to have a very special birthday since it was her first in France, so we really went all out! I don’t know when I have ever seen that many people in my house, or presents in one place…or a cake that big actually. Now that I think about it, I have a bone to pick with dear, sweet, generous Mom and Dad. At least they were thinking about someone!

Learn French with FrenchPod101.com! You wake up early one day during your trip to France, and you are excited to start your day. It’s a day just like any other day, except that it also happens to be your birthday! You are hoping your French friends are in a celebratory mood, so you call a few of them and hope to get together with them for dinner at your favorite French restaurant. However, every time you call a friend, they respond in French with, “Oh, tonight’s no good for me, I already have plans.” Throughout the day, you expect your friends to at least call to tell you “Happy Birthday” in French, but oddly, no one seems to remember that it’s your special day. Even though you’ve had twenty-nine of them before, this one is a big one! Finally, the friend traveling with you arrives back at your French hotel and tells you to get ready to go out to eat. Discouraged, you tell her in French, “I just feel like staying in tonight and ordering room service in the hotel.” She replies in French, “I’m not letting you stay home and mope tonight. I picked a good French restaurant on my way back to the hotel. We have to try it out.” You begrudgingly oblige her request, and you trudge off to the French restaurant. Much to your surprise, as soon as you walk in, your friends call out and scream in French, “Surprise!” Your friend laughs and exclaims in French, “Of course we wouldn’t have forgotten your thirtieth birthday!”

Learn French with FrenchPod101.com! Ah, your birthday is almost here again, and your friends are asking you in French what presents you would like. “There is a long list!” you assert in French. They ask you whether you have been shopping lately, and you respond in French, “No. I haven’t bought anything recently. I don’t have the latest French books, I don’t have the latest French fashion, and I don’t have the most recent French music.” They also ask whether you’ve bought tickets for the French Open. You laugh and suggest in French, “No, I haven’t got the tickets yet, but that would be a great gift.” You note your friends scribbling notes, and you decide to add in French, “While I’ve got your attention, I’d like to add to your list a new car - maybe a Peugeot? Thanks!”

I picked the best time to come to France! I have been shopping for a week solid and STILL have not spent all of our vacation money! Now, I have had to push a few French people around…and believe me-that blood will wash out. Sometimes women have to be a bit nasty to get what they want! But you would have done the same thing if you had seen that adorable French sweater that was on sale for twenty-five percent off! It will make the perfect birthday gift for my French roommate who will share it with me! Oh, where did I get that bruise? That was where that tiny French woman tripped me when I was running to get those really cute pink French running shoes. She deserved them…it was a good move on her part. Later, that same move won me these gorgeous French leather boots! What…the guys have boxing!

I finally had the opportunity to meet the part of my family who still lives in France almost six months ago. We have celebrated quite a few French holidays and birthdays together in that time. Now, it is December and we are getting ready for Christmas in France. I can’t wait! This will be my first French Christmas! For the most part it seems the French celebrate Christmas just like we do back home…but, I really need to know what to buy for the kids in my French family this Christmas. I asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas this afternoon, but I think I might need to practice my French a little. I could swear every one of them told me in French that they want, “everything!” The scary thing is that I think they were serious…
