You are driving in France, trying desperately to find your hotel. Suddenly, the French police stop your car and pull you over. Panicked, you try to remember the past five minutes of your driving, but you know you were concentrating more on finding your French hotel. What are you going to do? The officer walks to the side of your car, asks for your identification, and steps back a little from your car. Your heart is racing! The French officer continues to look back and forth between your identification and you, confused. He walks back to the car and asks you where you are from in French. This is a strange question, it’s right there on your identification! Maybe he can’t read English. You hesitate a second while the French policeman obviously grows anxious. You finally pull yourself together enough to tell him you are from America in French. He smiles reluctantly, apologizes, and tells you in French that you are not who he is looking for. The man they are looking for is French. Whew! It’s a good thing you learned how to tell someone where you are from in French!
