----Formal English---- I just came back from the station. I have just bought tickets to go to a summer job interview. When you enter the station hallway, you can see the magnificent mosaics. In the middle of the hallway, you will find the reception desk, the cafeteria, and the tobacco and news agents. If you continue straight on, you will reach the platforms. They're protected by a huge glass roof. Workers are renovating it. It should be done by summer. The metal structure is already repainted. The roof is almost done. It should be great when it's over. In France, you can find very different train stations, architecturally speaking…modern, ancient, and listed. But let's go back to the hallway. To the right, one finds the ticket office. The queue is delimited. Everyone waits for his turn. This is mine. The ticket lady found the tickets that suit my trip. She asked all possible questions so that I can have a preferential fare. Be aware that if you're under twenty-five, you're entitled to a discount. ----Formal English---- TV series are booming in France. Of course, I'm talking about series (and not about soap operas or serial stories) coming from the United States, like most trends. The first series that were a big hit were "Friends," which tells about the lives of five New York friends, and "ER," which shows the people in the emergency unit of a Chicago hospital. They were broadcast on public channels at peak times. But for me, the biggest series of all time is "The Sopranos." It was also broadcast on public channels but at time when kids were asleep. Private channels, such as Canal +, threw themselves into more disturbing American series like "Six Feet Under" or "Weeds." But one of the most popular ones must be "Lost." There are French series, but they are mostly serial stories. On one of the public channels, one of them tells a Marseille district story. All the set was recreated in a studio and sequences are filmed in and around Marseille. Another series that sold well all over Europe is "Sous le soleil," about the lives of several friends in Saint Tropez. Saint Tropez is always so attractive. Series also come in a wide variety of formats. Thus, the sketch serial "Un gars une fille" was a short format show that was broadcast just before the news bulletin. It was telling the everyday life of a couple. In the same vein, a rival channel produced "Caméra Café," a series of sketches where office employees meet at the coffee machine. There are now a lot. "Kaamlott" transforms the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. This parody mocks characters and history without fearing anachronisms. French series developed this ... ----Formal English---- In the bars of Nantes, an association comes to make people know all kind of games…wooden games, board games, and card games. This association is called "En jouez-vous?" The games can also be skill games such as the "frog game," where you have to throw quoits into holes that make you score different points. If you manage to throw one into the frog's mouth, you win the maximum! Games are more and more popular, and specialized stores are open all over the map. In Nantes, you can find all you want from chessboards to the latest in games in addition to backgammon sets. Card games mostly come from Germany, where creators aren't lacking originality. You can build the biggest field for your sheep flock in "La guerre des moutons" or the largest city in Citadelle or even challenge your friends to discover who knows most songs containing one word in "Shababada." In "Elixir," my favorite card game, each player plays a great magician to cast spells such as oblige somebody to "vouvoyer" you and call you "master" until the end of the game. Role-playing games are popular in France too. Before even starting a game, you have to create your character with a name, origins, and his or her own qualities. During the game, you have to interact with other players to solve a case and accomplish the mission according to the goal of the game you're playing. You can also take part in a murder party where you actually play the part of your character for the evening. If you want the party to go well, you have to dress up, learn the past of your character, be a real actor, and above all not mess up; otherwise, you'll ruin the game. During this evening, you'll be with your friends but you won't recognize them! And you, tell me about your favorite games! --------------------------... ----Formal English---- I work in a school for young adults. Last week, with my students, we discussed junior high school years. Quite soon, we talked about childhood nostalgia — about what we grew up with. I thought this would be a perfect topic for you. When I was a kid, I would go to school at eight o'clock a.m. Morning classes would last four hours. For lunch, I would come home for two hours. From two to five o'clock p.m., I would go back to school. Sometimes we would go to the bakery to buy sweets with francs cents that we found at home. I preferred the jelly sweets, a parent's horror. There were also the very sour ones that would almost make us cry. Once home, there was "the four o'clock," or in other words, the after-school snack. I have neat memories of huge pieces of bread and butter with chocolate pieces cut out of "pain de 2" ("two pounds of bread"). My grandmother used to keep chocolate in an old, round, metal street box that she put in the fridge door. As soon as her back was turned, we knew where to find it, and as she used to divide it into pieces in advance, it was harder to notice it than if it were still in a bar. When we weren’t at grandma's, we often had "chocos BN" as a snack. I sometimes still buy these chocolate or strawberry pulp-filled biscuits. It's a bit like Proust and his madeleine. I didn't work at all on Wednesdays, but sometimes on Saturday mornings. Wednesday is children's day in France. Many mothers don't work that day to take care of the children.... ----Formal English----
"Rap" Up a Hard Day of Work?
French rap. I took the metro as usual this week. However, last Monday morning when I got on the metro I was very, very tired! And when I'm tired, I'm very grumpy. Something made me angry. A kid sitting next to me had his music cranked all the way up! I recognized the song; it was one of the latest from Sinik, a popular French rap artist these days. Come to think of it, French rap is a real part of the panorama of French musical styles! French rap doesn't have an international audience like American rap does, but lots of French teenagers listen to both. MC Solaar is an artist who is somewhat known overseas, but I don't think that French rap in general is exported to many places. The value of this music is in the lyrics, which demand you to look at aspects of French society...but you need to understand what they're saying in order to do that. And you've got to admit, it's not easy to understand what they're saying because of all the slang and "verlan!" French rap is the most famous after American rap. It's a movement that really started to take off in 1984, and quickly developed thanks to American influence. If you come across a French rap video, you'll think it's funny because they don’t film most of them in France, but rather in the U.S., complete with hot girls and American cars. I think that French rappers look up to their American counterparts and so they try to exaggerate their image as bad boys. I think it's kind of weird... I used to listen to lots of French rap, but now I just catch it on the radio sometimes. I think I have matu... learn, french, language, culture, travel, frenchpod101, frenchpod, frenchpod.com FrenchPod101.com No No 3:01 Advanced Audio Blog S3 #5 - What’s Your Favorite Food to Eat in France? http://www.frenchpod101.com/2010/08/04/audio-blog-lesson-s3-5-whats-your-favorite-food-to-eat-in-france/ http://www.frenchpod101.com/2010/08/04/audio-blog-lesson-s3-5-whats-your-favorite-food-to-eat-in-france/#comments Wed, 04 Aug 2010 09:30:00 +0000 FrenchPod101.com Advanced Audio Blogknowing about different types of restaurants in francetypes of restaurants in france http://www.frenchpod101.com/2010/08/04/audio-blog-lesson-s3-5-whats-your-favorite-food-to-eat-in-france/ http://www.frenchpod101.com/2010/08/04/audio-blog-lesson-s3-5-whats-your-favorite-food-to-eat-in-france/feed/ Learn French with FrenchPod101.com! ----Formal English---- Last night, I went to a restaurant with friends. A decision has to be made but nobody makes it. I try to take things in hand. In the view of the fact that's it's the end of the month, I suggest that we go to a pizzeria. It's simple, cheap food and everyone can find something according to their taste among pizzas and pastas with different sauces. When we don't want to spend too much, we fancy going for Chinese. The food is of varying quality, as is the Italian. You have to taste it to know where to go to find the best quality-price ratio. Anyway, we had a good time, and that's why we like to eat out. Nobody's tied to the kitchen, and everybody can eat what they want. Today at noon, I met my mother for lunch in a brasserie. You can have a prix fixe menu to save money. Here comes the crucial dilemma…first course and main course or main course and dessert? That's not a problem for me; I prefer savory to sweet food. It will be the first option then. After fighting to find a parking space, I then had to go to the reception desk to get some change because, as always, I forgot to have a one-euro coin ready for the cart. But here I am at last. I go past the domestic electrical appliances and school stationery departments. Same for the clothing…I don't need any. I finally arrive in the food department, the aim of this weekend outing. Refrigerated shelves. I pass the "charcuterie" ("cooked pork meats"), weaving between the carts left behind by their owners. I look at my shopping list. I find butter and cheese. Meat is always well sorted by animal, so there's no problem finding what I want. Back to dairy…I forgot the yogurt. Why are there some many? Two shelves full of cups; the choice is hard among yogurt, flavored, with fruit bits, fat free… Okay, the pack joined my other foodstuffs. I get to the den of the vegetables and fruit. I take my plastic bags; I fill them in with tomatoes, carrots, apples, and oranges. I go to get my vegetables weighed. The scale man sticks the labels with bar codes on for the cash desk. There's only tins, pastas, and rice to go. I am at the checkout now. I pay by card. I didn't go to the automatic cashier; I prefer seeing somebody. I go out. It's okay; it just took me thirty minutes. I drive back home, and I put away the shopping. I can finally get my breath back. Next week, maybe I'll try the market. ----Formal English---- I studied in Nantes, one of France's largest western cities. If you look at a map, you'll find it on the Loire River, a few kilometers from the ocean. It's just below Brittany, of which it was the capital city. As such, Nantes castle's name is "Le château des ducs de Bretagne." The city developed economically thanks to the triangular trade, which consisted of selling Africans as slaves to the Americas. This not-very-glorious past can be seen on the well-off facades of the town center. When you walk away from it, you enter neighborhoods that used to be villages of independent fishermen or harbor workers. The architecture changes completely with more modest houses. I love this diversity and seeing that parts of the city away from the center are not dead but that life around shops still exists. Nantes is the city where I experienced the joys of independence. That's surely one of the reasons why I feel at home there. It's a very green city thanks to the oceanic climate, the numerous parks, and half a dozen rivers. On Sundays and in the summer, one can easily enjoy nature. Certain riverbanks were even converted into barbecue areas. Take my advice…from the town center, walk along the Erdre River on a walkway, which is forbidden to cars. After this walk, if you're too...
