You are flying into France next week to participate in a seminar the French-based company you work for is conducting. You know enough French to communicate fairly well, but you have not practiced speaking in French in quite some time. Suddenly you realize you haven’t even booked a room at the French hotel in which your company will be staying! This phone call to France will be one you will never forget! You try to explain what you need to the hotel clerk-in French that could definitely use a refresher course. You tell the French clerk that while you’re in France, you will need a desk and a very well lit room because you plan to study at night. You want to be able to study at the table, desk, or even the bed if you choose! Sounding a little confused, the hotel clerk asks you again in French, how many people will be staying with you. When you arrive at the French hotel, you are astonished to find that they have placed you in a four-bedroom suite! You explain to the front desk clerk in your broken French that they must have made a mistake! They look at the reservations and confirm that you asked for at least four lits in the room! All around you, your colleagues check into their rooms without a problem. Embarrassed, you accept the room, not wanting to admit that you should have taken that French course your boss recommended. I wonder how much overtime you have to work to pay for a four-lit suite in France!

You get into the class, and with the way the French teacher is barking commands left and right, you imagine you must look like you have two left feet. But you laugh and enjoy yourself anyway, in part at your expense, and in part at your French instructor’s sternness. Who can be stern when doing the French can-can? When you get back to the hotel, you call your French friend and invite your friend to dance with you tomorrow. Much to your surprise, your friend responds in French, “Heck no. I don’t dance.
