Dear Verginie,

I hope you get this.

I was reviewing this Lesson and I don’t quite hear how you pronounce the gus in une degustation. Is it pronounced goo as in goose or does it sound like gus, as in the name Gus as in the English name Gus? Or how does it sound? You can email me or leave a message here if you like. Thank you so much for your help.

Munia says:

@Rita: The “u” in “degustation” has a sound that doesn’t exist in English (as far as I know), and it’s a bit tricky at first. It’s a sound between the “u” in “goose” and the “i” in “fish”. You can imitate it by shaping your mouth as if to say “oo” as in “goose” and then actually saying “i” as in “fish”.

I hope that helps.

Hi Rita + Munia!

Munia, thanks for the pronounciation tip! It’s a actually the explanation I usually give to my students!

Rita, as Munia said: round lips + sound “i” at the same time should work. It will sound strange at first, but if you pronounce this sound in a word and keep repeating it, it will become easier. Also, if that helps, you can think of the sound “u” as the sound you make when you are about to whistle.

The better words you can train with are ones with the letters “g” or “b” right before the sound “u”, such as : “bu”, “légume”, “butte”…(drank, vegetable, hill)
Let us know if that helps!

Let me know if you have any other question!

chloe says:

Well omo you sound it out like in the french alphabet  but you don’t say the last letter except if its a vowel . so A E I O U H Y . With H if a word starts with H you just don’t produce it . And for the the word qu est you would pronuse it kay es which seems weird but in french q’s kinda sound like american K’s some tricks are to go to youtube and listen to the alphabet and simple phrases and look at the spelling and how they say it because if you ever do go to france knowing these ” simple ” tricks will help you . Good luck

Hope I was help Chloe
