No! Tell them I cannot come to the phone, Mom! How many times do I have to tell her I am studying for my midterms for the French university? I took a chance and went to a French café yesterday to study with a group of French students. Do you know how much studying we did in the three hours we were in the French cafe? We studied for about fifteen minutes-fifteen minutes! It’s harder for me I think because French is not my native language, so it takes me a little longer to translate the text. On the other hand, maybe I just worry more about tests! Either way, I learned yesterday after wasting three hours of study time, that until the French exams are over my friends are my worst enemies!

I finally had the opportunity to meet the part of my family who still lives in France almost six months ago. We have celebrated quite a few French holidays and birthdays together in that time. Now, it is December and we are getting ready for Christmas in France. I can’t wait! This will be my first French Christmas! For the most part it seems the French celebrate Christmas just like we do back home…but, I really need to know what to buy for the kids in my French family this Christmas. I asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas this afternoon, but I think I might need to practice my French a little. I could swear every one of them told me in French that they want, “everything!” The scary thing is that I think they were serious…

Last weekend I spent the night in my friend’s Southern French home. She invited all of my closest friends over, which was great! Many of us have moved to different regions of France since we left school and we have lost touch. We sat all night at her dining table eating this fantastic French cheese fondue she served! It was a perfect choice to keep us all at the table while we ate! The longer we sat eating this French raclette, the more we talked! We were so lost in reminiscing we lost track of the time and were shocked when we realized it was 3:00 am! The French wine and raclette complemented each other as well as the French friendships we rekindled. There’s no better conversation starter than French raclette!

You are walking through the Louvre. You have dreamed of this moment for years. As a student of French art, you fell in love with many of these works in French books and films, but to see them with your own eyes now is breathtaking. You spend what must be an eternity at each French piece, taking in every line, every brushstroke, trying to relive the artists’ movements as they created each one. The French curator, noticing that you have visited several times for many hours and seem to know something about art, approaches you. He asks you your opinion about the painting you are looking at in French. You know that he spends a lot of time with the French art and has studied for years. You are flattered that he has asked, and a little intimidated to answer as well. You think to yourself that you may never get the opportunity to discuss French art with someone so deeply embedded in it again. Then you realize you do not know how to tell someone your opinion in French. How do you say, “I think…” or “I believe…” in French? Maybe you could just shrug your shoulders…

Nobody told me that a vacation in Paris could be so exhausting! However, nobody told me we were vacationing during the Telethon 2008 in France either! I had no idea I was that out of shape! How could I possibly say no to such a wonderful cause though, right? You should have seen how many French people were running the marathon and participating in Telethon 2008! I guess I probably wouldn’t be so worn-out if the French guy running next to me hadn’t kept trying to compete with me! I tried to tell him it wasn’t a race, but he yelled back at me in a thick French accent, “maybe not to you!” Well, you know how guys are…I couldn’t let him act like that. So, I had to beat him for the other French runners. What do you mean, you saw me being getting into a French cab?
