A sewage worker, and a pig farmer and a FrenchPod101.com student are on a holiday in France. After a long day seeing the sights, they retire to a bar. They order some wine and cheese. But instead of the flaky, odorless fare that they are used to, the waiter serves them a block of blue cheese with a strong aroma. “Phew!” says the pig farmer. “That stinks!” “Yuck!” says the sewage worker. “Disgusting!” “Delicious!” says the FrenchPod101.com student, popping another piece of cheese in his mouth. “A Brillat Savarin, if I’m not mistaken.” The jaws of the French people around the bar drop, both at the ignorance of the farmer and worker, and the knowledge of the student. A Frenchman approaches the trio. “You, sir are what we French call a connoisseur. Please, allow me to pay for your meal, and show you all the wonders of our country. Leave those ignorant companions, with their noses polluted by sewage and pigs, and join us.”

Today’s lesson is about cheese. Stop by FrenchPod101.com for an English translation, review exercises and more!

Have you ever had to guess when an appointment was? It’s not fun. Not knowing when an appointment is defeats the whole purpose of an appointment, so be sure to ask when things start. And unless you feel like knocking on random doors and asking “Is the place?”, be sure to ask where an appointment is. Important information.

In this lesson we’ll be going over essential French vocabulary, “when” and “where” and “at what time”. You’ll need these French language tools to arrive on time (and in the right place) to appointments in French speaking countries After listening to the audio lesson, remember to stop by FrenchPod101.com and leave us your questions on French grammar, and French culture!

Hearing your friend’s question, you giggle, and try to look smart. You scratch your head, thinking about the French she used. She speaks quite fast, and it might take you a second to work out exactly what she said… Um… she used the “vous” form, you’re reasonably sure of that… and it was a question involving…. a potato, you’re quite sure of that… or perhaps an elephant… you didn’t quite catch the verb in the question so it makes it hard to…. Umm…. how long have you been standing here scratching your head? Does she realise that you didn’t understand at all? What should you say?

How about the truth? In today’s lesson from the Newbie course, we’re learning how to say “I don’t understand”. We’ll also learn how to ask someone to “say it slowly please”. We recommend you use these phrases often, as your French speaking friends probably already know when you don’t understand what they’ve said! For more language resources, online exercises, and the accompanying PDF, come to FrenchPod101.com!
