If God decided to pluck you out of your computer chair and put you down in Paris, at a random time during its long history, the chances are that you wouldn’t recognise where you were. If you said “excusez-moi” to the first passerby he might be a Celtic fisherman, a Roman soldier, a Hun invader, or a Viking settler, depending on the time period you had been thrown into.
