Pretend that the nationality of the subject today’s Audio Blog wasn’t immediately obvious by the name of our site. FrenchPod101. Just consider, if you will, Serge Gainsborg, independent of any nationality. The son of a cabaret pianist. Painter. Composer. Comedian. Clown. Writer. Provocateur. Musician. Could his nationality be anything but French?

Serge Gainsbourg is the quintessential French artist; avant garde, revolutionary, romantic. He should be; he shaped and seduced the French speaking world through his art. After listening to the audio, don’t forget to stop by FrenchPod101.com, where the English translation, and other learning tools are available. And don’t forget to leave us a comment!

Have you ever had one of those days when you feel like maybe you just should have stayed in bed? It started before you even woke up this morning! Your annoying cat unplugged the alarm in one of her middle-of-the-night rampages through your French home. Now, you are late to work so you have no time to shower (ew!) as you rush out the door. Halfway to your new (and soon to be former) job with a French Communications Company, you have a flat tire. You finally arrive at work-hungry, thirsty, and exhausted from your morning run-three hours late! Unexpectedly, your French boss is very understanding. You sit down at your desk and one of your coworkers asks you if you are okay in French. You do not know the word in French to express what you are feeling right now, so you say nothing. If you knew how explain that you are hungry and thirsty in French she could tell you the boss always brings coffee and croissants on Mondays. Cheer up, the day has just begun!

Learning French with FrenchPod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn French! In this French Beginner Lesson, you will learn how to use the French verb avoir to express your desires in French, such as hunger, thirst, and sleep, among others. You will also learn how to ask and answer the question, “are you okay?” in French.

Little babies are so cute—especially when they first learn to talk! They want to know what everything is! So curious…they want to know, “what is that?” only about one-hundred times a day! It’s enough to drive a parent insane! Well, welcome to the French asylum. Walk with me for a minute down the padded walls while I explain to you why you are here. Over here to your left in room one, you were sitting with your family in a lovely French restaurant. The French waiter brought you something squiggly on a plate and you asked the waiter in French, “what is that?” Further, down the hall in room three, you were walking through the Louvre when your children began spouting multiple, “what is that’s?” in French from every direction. Your favorite being when you daughter happened upon a nude statue…! And at the end of the hall in room forty-eight, you will find your spouse still asking repeatedly, “what is that?” in French when he received the credit card bill in the mail after your shopping trip in Paris. So, you can see, as crazy as it makes you, how will you learn if you cannot ask, “what is that” in French?

Learning French with FrenchPod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn French! In this French Newbie lesson, you will learn how to ask what something is in French. Then you will learn about the French la terre d’accueil (greeting territory).

For this lesson, put down your notebook. Yes, just leave it on the desk. Take that pencil and put it back in its pencil case. All you’ll need is your mp3 player and headphones… I’ll just give you a moment to find them. Ready? Sorry, almost forgot: a nice clean glass… have you got one handy? And a finally nice bottle of French wine. We recommend the Bordeaux, 2004. Pop the cork, pour yourself a glass, press play, and enjoy. Because today we’re guiding you through French wines. (Underage French students should substitute fine French wine for a refreshing soft drink).
